Walter J. Scheller, III, was appointed Chief Executive Officer of Walter Energy in September 2011 after serving as President and Chief Operating Officer of the Company's primary subsidiary, Jim Walter Resources, beginning in June 2010. Prior to joining Jim Walter Resources, Mr. Scheller worked from June 2006 at Peabody Energy Corporation as Group Executive, Colorado Operations and before that, Senior Vice President, Strategic Operations. Prior to his career at Peabody, Mr. Scheller worked for CNX Gas Corporation as Vice President, Northern Appalachia Gas Operations as well as Consol Energy where he held a number of executive and operational roles, the last of which was Vice President, Operations. Mr. Scheller holds an MBA from University of Pittsburgh—Joseph M. Katz Graduate School of Business, a Juris Doctor degree from Duquesne University and a bachelor's degree in mining engineering from West Virginia University.
Daniel P. Cartwright was appointed President, Canadian Operations, in January 2012 after serving as Vice President, Underground Mining Operations since joining Walter Energy in July 2011. With more than 37 years of mining experience, he previously worked for Peabody Energy from January 2011 to December 2011 as Vice President, Operations Support—Powder River Basin and Southwest where he supported six large mines across Wyoming, New Mexico and Arizona. Prior to that, from May 2004 to December 2010, Mr. Cartwright was Operations Director—North Antelope Rochelle Operations Unit, Peabody's flagship operation. He also served Shell Mining Company for more than 15 years in various positions, the last of which was President, Shell/Marrowbone Development Company. Mr. Cartwright graduated summa cum laude from University of Missouri—Rolla with a Bachelor of Science degree in mining engineering.
Richard A. Donnelly was named President, Jim Walter Resources, in January 2012 after most recently serving as Vice President, Engineering, at Jim Walter Resources since March 2003. Beginning his career with the Company in 1977, Mr. Donnelly has extensive experience in all aspects of the mining business. He has held numerous positions within the engineering and operations areas of various Walter Energy properties, including Deputy Mine Manager and Mine Manager positions as well as Vice President, Operations. Mr. Donnelly holds a Bachelor of Science degree in mining engineering from the University of Missouri—Rolla.
Earl H. Doppelt was named Senior Vice President, General Counsel and Secretary, of Walter Energy in January 2012. With more than 30 years of legal experience, he joined the Company from Information Services Group where he served as Executive Vice President, General Counsel and Secretary from December 2006 to May 2010. Mr. Doppelt has also served as the senior legal officer of other major global companies, including The Nielsen Corporation (formerly VNU), ACNielsen Corporation, The Dun & Bradstreet Corporation and Paramount Communications. He is a summa cum laude graduate of Cornell Law School and University of Rochester.
Michael D. Griffin was named Acting Treasurer at Walter Energy in July 2011 after serving as Assistant Treasurer for more than eight years. He joined Walter Energy in 2000 as Cash Manager prior to which he held various cash management positions with Citibank. With 20 years of dedicated experience in his field, he is a Certified Cash Manager and holds a bachelor's degree in business economics from Central Washington University.
William "Bill" Harvey was named Chief Financial Officer for Walter Energy in July 2012. Mr. Harvey was previously Senior Vice President and Chief Financial Officer of Resolute Forest Products Inc., a global forest products company listed on the New York Stock Exchange and the Toronto Stock Exchange. At Resolute, Mr. Harvey had overall accountability for finance, accounting, treasury, SEC reporting, tax, risk management, business development, strategic planning and investor relations. He worked at Resolute for more than 20 years and excelled in increasingly challenging positions, including playing a major role in the 2007 merger of Abitibi-Consolidated Inc. and Bowater Inc., which resulted in a $7 billion revenue company. Mr. Harvey has an MBA from the University of Toronto, Canada and a bachelor of science degree in mechanical engineering from the Queen's University in Kingston, Ontario, Canada, Mr. Harvey is also a Chartered Financial Analyst.
Michael R. Hurley joined Walter Energy in September 2009 as Vice President, Tax, and in January 2012, he assumed additional responsibilities to lead the post-acquisition activity of Walter Energy/Western Coal for process improvements, value creation and governance. Prior to Walter Energy, Mr. Hurley served as Vice President–Tax at Home Shopping Network (HSN) and Kforce, a professional personnel placement company, both in Tampa, Fla. In addition to holding adjunct faculty positions teaching various accounting courses at the university level, Mr. Hurley also worked in progressively challenging roles including Tax Director and Tax Manager for several companies, including Fortune 500 company Harris Corporation. With more than 24 years of experience in his field, Mr. Hurley is a certified public accountant in the State of Florida and a member of the American Institute of Certified Public Accountants and the Florida Institute of Certified Public Accountants. He attended Florida Southern College where he graduated summa cum laude while obtaining both his MBA degree and bachelor's degree in accounting.
Robert P. Kerley joined the Company in September 2010 and was named Walter Energy's Vice President, Corporate Controller and Chief Accounting Officer. Mr. Kerley has over 25 years of experience and prior to joining Walter Energy, held various senior finance positions across the globe, including from September 2006 to September 2010, Vice President and Corporate Controller—Worldwide at Avocent Corporation, a developer and manufacturer of server and desktop management solutions. Prior to Avocent, he held the position of Senior Director and Divisional Chief Financial Officer for the Mobile Computing Division at Symbol Technologies, a manufacturer and worldwide supplier of mobile data capture delivery equipment. Before Symbol Technologies, Mr. Kerley worked in Asia for more than eight years in multiple senior management positions. Mr. Kerley began his accounting career in June 1985 with Arthur Andersen & Company and is a Certified Public Accountant and holds a Bachelor of Science degree in accounting from Oklahoma Christian University.
Thomas "Tom" J. Lynch was named Senior Vice President, Human Resources for Walter Energy in April 2012. Mr. Lynch has over 25 years of experience in Human Resources including labor and employee relations, performance management, recruitment and retention. Prior to joining Walter Energy, Mr. Lynch was the Vice President, Human Resources for NRG Energy. He started his career as a labor attorney then moved to IBM for 18 years where he held a series of progressively responsible Human Resources positions. Mr. Lynch holds a Bachelor of Arts degree from the State University of New York at Oswego, and a Juris Doctor degree from New York Law School.
Michael T. Madden was named Senior Vice President and Chief Commercial Officer at Walter Energy in May 2012 after previously serving as Senior Vice President, Marketing, since April 2011. Before that, he was Senior Vice President, Sales and Marketing, since February 2010 and Vice President-Marketing, Transportation, and Quality Control since 1997 for the Company's primary subsidiary, Jim Walter Resources. Before joining Jim Walter Resources, Mr. Madden held various management positions in the coal industry for both the domestic and export markets from 1974 through 1996. He is a member of the National Mining Association, the Alabama Coal Association, and the Coal Trade Association of New York as well as a former Director of the Coal Exporters Association. Mr. Madden holds a bachelor's degree in marketing from St. Bonaventure University.
Charles C. Stewart is Senior Vice President, Project Development, at Walter Energy. Having assumed responsibility for Walter Energy's operations in West Virginia and Wales in 2011, he was formerly President and Chief Operating Officer of Walter Minerals since November 2010; President of Walter Minerals since July 2007; and President and Chief Operating Officer of Walter Coke since May 2003. Beginning his career with the Company in 1978, Mr. Stewart has held a number of progressively responsible leadership roles in various mining and engineering capacities across the Company, culminating in his appointment as Vice President, Engineering. Mr. Stewart is a current board member of the Sloss Furnace Museum and a trustee of the Birmingham Chamber of Commerce, and he has served on several mining and manufacturing boards at both the state and national levels. He holds an MBA from Samford University and a Bachelor of Science degree in mineral engineering from the University of Alabama.
J. Calven Swinea was appointed Vice President of Administration, Canadian Operations at Walter Energy in June 2012. He previously held the position of Vice President, Internal Audit since August 2010. Prior to joining the Company, Mr. Swinea worked for Avocent Corporation (Emerson Network Power) in Huntsville, Ala., for four years most recently as Director, Financial Planning and Analysis, and prior to that position, Director, Internal Audit. From 2001 through 2006, he served as Vice President, Internal Audit and Division Controller, for Sanmina-SCI Corporation, a Fortune 500 company and leading electronics contract manufacturer based in San Jose, Calif. Mr. Swinea began his career as Senior Manager, Assurance and Advisory Business Services, at Ernst & Young. A Certified Public Accountant in the State of Alabama, he is a member of the American Institute of Certified Public Accountants and the Alabama Society of Certified Public Accountants. Mr. Swinea holds a master's degree and bachelor's degree in accounting from the University of Alabama.
